Blackpool Ct

    San Jose, CA

    Project Overview

EARTHTEK Paving and Grinding Inc completed this private roadway improvement project on Blackpool Ct in the San Jose hills, upgrading the long, curved drive serving a hillside estate. Our crew excavated and formed a new concrete curb and gutter along the roadway's edge — following the sweeping curves of the property's fence line — to control hillside water runoff, then addressed the aging, cracked pavement with asphalt paving and protective sealcoating.

Hillside roadways live or die by drainage. On a grade like this one, uncontrolled runoff finds every crack in the pavement, washes out edges, and undermines the base — which is exactly the deterioration the existing surface was showing. The right fix starts at the edge: a formed concrete curb and gutter that captures water and carries it where it belongs, so the new pavement surface behind it actually lasts.

    Scope of Work

    • Excavation and grading along the roadway edge
    • Concrete curb and gutter forming, placement, and hand finishing
    • Asphalt paving of the roadway surface
    • Protective sealcoating

    Why This Project Was Needed

The existing roadway showed the classic signs of hillside pavement wear:

    • Extensive cracking — visible across the drive's surface; open cracks on a slope let water reach the base, where damage compounds fast
    • No edge drainage control — without curb and gutter, hillside runoff flowed across and along the pavement, accelerating deterioration
    • Edge erosion — unconfined pavement edges on a grade break down under water flow and vehicle loading
    • Oxidized, worn surface — a faded, brittle surface at the end of its service life
    • Estate presentation — a deteriorated drive undercuts a property where the approach is part of the experience

Our Concrete Curb & Gutter Process

    • Layout & excavation — Marked the curb alignment through the roadway's curves, then trenched and graded the edge with a mini excavator.
    • Old material removal — Broke out and removed failed edge pavement and spoils.
    • Forming — Set wood forms through the sweeping radius work — curved forming is where craftsmanship shows, and these curves were formed to flow cleanly with the fence line.
    • Concrete placement — Poured the curb and gutter section, working the mix into the forms for full consolidation.
    • Hand finishing — Shaped, troweled, and finished the curb profile by hand for a smooth, uniform gutter line that carries water down the grade.
    • Curing & form stripping — Protected the fresh concrete during cure, then stripped forms and backfilled behind the curb.

Our Asphalt Paving & Sealcoating Approach

    • Surface preparation — Repair and prep the cracked roadway surface, tying into the new gutter line at a clean, consistent edge.
    • Asphalt installation — Pave the roadway with hot mix asphalt at consistent depth, graded to shed water toward the new gutter.
    • Compaction — Roll while hot for a dense, tight surface built for the grade.
    • Sealcoating — After cure, apply protective sealer to defend the new surface against UV, water, and daily wear — the maintenance step that keeps hillside pavement performing.

    Equipment Used on This Project

    • Mini excavator for edge trenching and demolition
    • EARTHTEK service truck and water trailer
    • Concrete forms, stakes, and radius forming materials
    • Screeds, floats, and hand-finishing trowels
    • Measuring wheel and layout tools
    • Asphalt paving and compaction equipment
    • Sealcoating application equipment

    The Result

A hillside drive rebuilt from the edge in: a hand-finished concrete curb and gutter flowing with the property's curves to control runoff, and a renewed, sealed roadway surface engineered to shed water and stand up to the grade — protecting both the pavement investment and the estate's approach for years to come.
