EARTHTEK Paving and Grinding Inc completed this residential asphalt driveway paving project in Los Altos, CA, replacing a worn hillside driveway with a smooth, durable new asphalt surface. The long, sloped approach — a common challenge in the Los Altos hills — required careful grade work, clean edge forming along the landscaped borders, and precise compaction on the incline to deliver a driveway built for daily use and decades of performance.
Sloped driveways demand more than flat lots: water has to be directed off the surface without eroding the edges, the asphalt has to be placed and compacted uphill without segregation, and transitions at the street and garage have to be seamless. Our crew handled all of it, finishing with crisp, formed edges that frame the fresh pavement against the surrounding landscaping.
Scope of Work
Surface preparation and grading on a sloped hillside driveway
Edge forming along landscaped borders
Hot mix asphalt paving installation
Compaction and hand-finished transitions at the street and garage
Why This Project Was Needed
Hillside driveways in Los Altos and the surrounding Peninsula face conditions that wear pavement out faster than flat ground:
Cracking and surface deterioration — visible on the aging neighboring pavement; open cracks let water in, where it undermines the base on a slope
Water runoff and erosion — sloped surfaces channel water at speed, accelerating edge breakup and base washout
Rough, worn surfaces — hurt curb appeal in a neighborhood where presentation matters
Steep-grade traction and drainage — an aging, uneven surface on an incline becomes a safety concern for vehicles and foot traffic
Edge failure — driveways without proper edge support crumble along landscaped borders
Our Driveway Paving Process on This Project
Site preparation — Cleaned and prepped the existing surface, with the EARTHTEK skid steer handling material moving and prep work in the tight residential footprint.
Grading for drainage — Fine-graded the sloped approach so water sheds off the driveway without eroding the landscaped edges.
Edge forming — Set wood edge forms along both sides of the driveway for clean, straight lines and proper asphalt confinement against the mulched planting beds.
Hot mix asphalt installation — Placed fresh hot mix asphalt up the slope with our Weiler P65 paver at consistent depth and grade.
Compaction — Rolled the surface with a tandem drum roller — plus a walk-behind roller for edges and tight areas — while the asphalt was hot to achieve a dense, tight finish on the incline.
Hand finish work — Raked and luted transitions at the street connection and garage apron for smooth, flush tie-ins.
Cleanup & cure — Cleared the site and set cure time before the driveway reopened to vehicles.
Equipment Used on This Project
Weiler P65 asphalt paver
EARTHTEK Bobcat tracked skid steer

The Result
A smooth, jet-black asphalt driveway with clean formed edges, proper drainage down the slope, and seamless transitions at the street and garage — a major curb appeal upgrade that's built to handle daily traffic and Peninsula weather for years to come.
