School Asphalt Paving & Striping Project

    Project Overview

EARTHTEK Paving and Grinding Inc completed this school paving project to improve safety, accessibility, and curb appeal across the campus. Our crew handled full site preparation, installed a smooth, durable asphalt surface, and finished with crisp, clearly marked parking lot striping — creating a safer environment for students, staff, and visitors alike.

School campuses see constant traffic from buses, parent drop-offs, staff vehicles, and pedestrians, making a well-graded, professionally installed asphalt pavement essential. High-visibility striping — including designated stalls, crosswalks, fire lanes, and ADA-accessible spaces — keeps traffic flowing safely and helps the campus stay compliant.

    Scope of Work

    • Site preparation and grading
    • Commercial asphalt paving installation
    • Parking lot striping and pavement markings

    Why This Project Was Needed

Aging school pavement isn't just a cosmetic issue — it's a safety and liability concern. Common warning signs include:

    • Alligator cracking or potholes — indicates base failure and creates trip hazards for students
    • Standing water and poor drainage — accelerates pavement deterioration and creates slip hazards
    • Faded or missing striping — causes parking confusion, unsafe pedestrian crossings, and liability exposure
    • ADA non-compliance — outdated accessible stalls, missing signage, or improper slopes can trigger fines and lawsuits
    • Crumbling edges and raveling — loose gravel becomes a hazard near walkways and play areas
    • Unclear traffic flow — missing arrows and crosswalks create conflicts between buses, parent vehicles, and pedestrians during drop-off and pick-up

    Our School Asphalt Paving Process

    • Site evaluation & assessment — Inspect existing pavement for cracking, drainage issues, and base failure; schedule work around school calendars (summer break, weekends) to avoid disrupting campus operations.
    • Demolition & removal — Mill or excavate failed asphalt and haul it away, often recycling it as reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP).
    • Grading & sloping — Shape the sub-surface to direct water runoff away from buildings, walkways, and play areas — proper drainage is the #1 factor in pavement lifespan.
    • Sub-base preparation — Install and compact aggregate base rock to create a stable, load-bearing foundation for buses and daily traffic.
    • Proof roll & repairs — Run a loaded truck over the sub-base to detect soft spots; undercut and repair weak areas before paving.
    • Binder course installation — Lay the lower asphalt layer (larger aggregate mix) for structural strength.
    • Surface course paving — Install the smooth top layer of hot mix asphalt with a paver at even depth and grade.
    • Compaction — Compact each layer with vibratory and finish rollers while hot to achieve target density and a sealed surface.
    • Transitions & cleanup — Blend joints where new asphalt meets existing surfaces, sidewalks, and drainage structures; clean the site and allow cure time before reopening.

    Our Parking Lot Striping Process

    • Layout planning — Design for traffic flow, stall counts, bus lanes, drop-off zones, crosswalks, and ADA-accessible spaces per current code.
    • Surface cleaning — Sweep and blow off debris so paint bonds properly; new asphalt cures 14–30 days before striping.
    • Measuring & marking — Snap chalk reference lines for straight, uniform stalls, arrows, and lettering.
    • Striping application — Apply traffic-grade paint with a line striping machine for crisp, consistent lines.
    • Stenciling & specialty markings — Add ADA symbols, staff/visitor stalls, fire lanes, crosswalks, directional arrows, and no-parking zones.
    • Curing & reopening — Allow paint to dry (typically 30–60 minutes per coat), remove barricades, and reopen the lot.

    Equipment Used on This Project

    • Asphalt paver
    • Milling/grinding machine — a core EARTHTEK specialty
    • Motor grader and skid steers
    • Vibratory drum rollers and pneumatic finish rollers
    • Dump trucks and material transfer vehicles
    • Plate compactors for edges and tight areas
    • Line striping machine
    • Stencils, chalk lines, and layout tools

    The Result

A smooth, clearly marked asphalt surface that improves safety and accessibility for students, staff, and visitors — with proper drainage, ADA-compliant markings, and a traffic layout built to handle busy drop-off and pick-up hours for years to come.
