Frequently Asked Questions About Asphalt Paving

Does EARTHTEK provide free estimates?

Indeed, we do. Prior to providing you with a proposal, we will conduct a site walk with you to gain a complete understanding of your paving project.

How thick should asphalt driveway be?

In the Bay Area, it's recommended that asphalt driveways achieve a thickness of 2-3 inches once compacted. The thickness of pavement for parking lots varies based on expected traffic volume and type. For commercial paving, the depth can range from 3 inches to 8 inches, tailored to the specific requirements of your parking lot.

How often should I seal coat my asphalt pavement in Mountain View?

Typically, in the Bay Area, it's advisable to apply a seal coat to your driveway approximately every three years. For parking lots, the recommended frequency for sealcoating varies between two to four years.

What happens if you seal coat asphalt too soon?

Asphalt needs a few months to fully cure. Applying sealcoating prematurely can lead to trapping lightweight oils in the pavement. This can result in a softer surface, making it more vulnerable to imprints, tire marks, and various forms of damage.

How much does it cost to pave a driveway in the Bay Area?

This is not an easy question to answer. The driveways in Bay Area range from a couple of hundred square feet to thousands of square feet. Most asphalt contractors} have a base price and an additional per square foot charge.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes, we are fully insured, including workers' compensation insurance. We are licensed by the state of California. Our license #995715

What is asphalt made of?

Asphalt consists of aggregates like crushed stone and sand, which are held together by a binder known as bitumen. This mixture gives asphalt pavement its characteristic black color. Bitumen, the binding agent, is derived from crude oil.

Is asphalt environmentally friendly?

Yes, asphalt is one of the most recycled items in the world. Most of our asphalt mixes are from recycled asphalt with some added virgin asphalt.

What is the recommended slope for paved surfaces?

A 1.5% to 3% slope is the minimum slope for paved surfaces.

Can you pave over my existing asphalt?

Sometimes we will pave over existing asphalt surfaces. If the sub-base and the existing asphalt are stable, we can pave over it. An asphalt overlay is usually the most cost effect paving method. We will need to mill (scrape off) around transition areas such as sidewalks, roadways or driveway aprons.

How long does it take to install a new asphalt driveway?

A lot will depend on the size of the driveway and the shape of the existing driveway. Usually, we can do the prep work in 1-2 days and the paving in one day.

Do I need a building Permit For a Driveway?

Most municipalities will require a building permit for a new driveway in the Bay Area. Some cities will require a building permit if you resurface your driveway. Having worked in the Bay Area for over 15 years, we know each city's requirements and can help you navigate the building permitting process.
