How Thick Should Asphalt Driveway Be?
A driveway should have 2”-3” of asphalt at compaction. More importantly is the sub base thickness because it supports the asphalt. Typical driveways will have 4”-6” of compact aggregate for the subbase. Locations with clay soils, the subbase will need to be deeper or geotextile fabric will be used to help stabilize the soil.
How often should I apply sealcoating to my driveway?
We recommend you seal coat your driveway every three years. Parking lot sealcoating will range from every 2-3 years.
How thick should an asphalt parking lot be?
A light duty parking lot will have 3”-4” of asphalt. This is done in two lifts. The first lift called the binder lift, will be 2” and the finish lift 2”. The base will 5”-7” deep. Heavy duty parking lots with a significant amount of heavy weight traffic can have up to 6”-8” of asphalt and base depth of 8”-10”
What is the cost to pave a driveway in Milpitas?
There is no easy way to answer the cost of paving a driveway in Milpitas. There are many factors that go into estimating a paving project. The most important factor is the total square footage. What is asphalt made of?
Asphalt is made from aggregates, such as crushed stone and sand. The binder called bitumen binds the aggregates together, and asphalt pavement is black in color. Bitumen is produced from crude oil.
Is asphalt environmentally friendly?
Yes, asphalt is one of the most recycled items in the world. Most of our asphalt mixes are from recycled asphalt with some added virgin asphalt.
Is an asphalt driveway cheaper than a concrete driveway?
Yes asphalt driveways are less expensive than a concrete driveway. Additionally, the cost per square foot decreases more with asphalt than concrete. We can pave a long driveway a lot faster then installing a concrete driveway. While both driveways are labor intensive, concrete requires exponential more labor to install.
Can you pave over my existing asphalt?
Sometimes we will pave over existing asphalt surfaces. If the sub-base and the existing asphalt are stable, we can pave over it. An asphalt overlay is usually the most cost effect paving method. We will need to mill (scrape off) around transition areas such as sidewalks, roadways or driveway aprons.
How long should an asphalt driveway last?
Asphalt is a great material for parking lots and driveways. The appeal of asphalt is it more affordable then concrete but has almost the same longevity. A properly installed driveway will last 10-15 years in Milpitas.
