Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

Generally speaking, in the San Jose area, an asphalt driveway should be 2โ€-3โ€ of asphalt and have a subbase of 4โ€-6โ€ crushed aggregate. There are some exceptions to this. If you have expansive soils, such as clay, we may need to increase the depth of the subbase and/or use a geotextile underlayment to help stabilize the soil.

Can you extend my driveway?

Yes, we can extend or widen your driveway. We have full grading and excavation capabilities to create the driveway of your dreams.

Do you use coal tar sealers?

No, we do not use coal tar sealers. In fact, California has banned the use of coal tar sealers. Additionally, multiple studies have shown that coal tar is terrible for the environment and harmful to people.

What is asphalt milling?

Asphalt milling is the process of grinding off 1โ€-2โ€ of the existing asphalt to provide a smooth surface for an asphalt overlay. Asphalt overlays are an affordable option to provide new life to your parking lot.

Do you work with homeowner associations?

Yes, we work with HOAs, property managers, churches, schools, cities, homeowners, government agencies and anyone else who is looking for an asphalt contractor committed to providing the best value for their clients.

Are you insured?

Yes, we are an insured paving contractor. Additionally, we are licensed by California.

How long will an asphalt driveway last?

Fortunately, in our part of California, we typically do not have to deal with the freeze-thaw cycle, which can cause problems with the pavement. A properly installed asphalt driveway should last at least 15 years. However, if you are diligent about preventive maintenance, such as sealing cracks and patching potholes, your driveway can last over 25 years.

How often should I have my driveway seal coated?

Driveway sealcoating should be done every three years to maximize the life span of your driveway.

How thick should an asphalt parking lot be?

Every parking lot is different and has different requirements. With that said, here are some general guidelines on commercial asphalt paving. A light-duty parking lot will have 3โ€-4โ€ of asphalt with a 6โ€ sub base. A parking lot that needs to support heavy vehicles, such as trash trucks or semi-trailer trucks, can up to 6โ€-8โ€ of asphalt with up to a 10โ€ base.
We work with property managers and engineers to determine the proper thickness of the asphalt and subbase to ensure the parking lot is installed and built to last.

Is concrete or asphalt better?

The age-old debate of concrete driveways vs asphalt driveways will never end. Each material has its pros and cons. Driveway paving is more affordable than a concrete driveway. However, a concrete driveway will last longer and carry heavier loads.

Can you help to ensure my parking lot meets ADA requirements?

We work with property managers to ensure they meet Californiaโ€™s ADA parking lot requirements.
